Demonic influence via the occult can enter our lives by three different avenues. First, inherited factors in our parents or grandparents or someone in close, direct blood relationship with us involving any occult activity i.e., astrology, divination, sorcery or witchcraft. The Bible states that the sins of the parents are visited on the children even to the third and fourth generation.

This means that when a demonic influence enters a family lineage it passes from generation to generation. For example, many people in America today are descended from French settlers in Louisiana. In southern Louisiana today great numbers of people are under heavy demonic oppression resulting from occult involvements of ancestors 30, 50, 80 or more years ago. Their descendants are tormented by evil spirits because of the sins of the fathers.

Voodoo is still very strong in Louisiana and other southern states. Many there have ancestors brought in as slaves from Africa where demon worship was routinely practiced. All this was imported into this country and now, years later, many are afflicted. Because of inherited problems, everyone needs some deliverance.

There may well be things hanging on which may have entered at the time of conception or birth. Demons often state, “I entered the night that he was conceived. I had a right to enter because of the iniquity of parent” (or grandparents of other direct ancestors). In this way the occult can fasten to a family for three, four or more generations and we must be aware of this possibility. Because of this it would be wise to check your own roots and family tree. This could alert you if someone back a few generations was directly involved in any kind of occult activity. In such a case this would have a direct bearing on you and could seriously affect your happiness and prosperity in this life, and that of your children.

A second source of occult problems arise from your own personal involvement in what God calls spiritual adultery or whoredom. By dabbling in any way, even in such games as the planchet, Ouija board, and Dungeons and Dragons you opened an avenue for Satan to use for invasion of your life. If you have been a firm believer in horoscopes or studied occult literature; if you have worn amulets or charms; if you visited a fortune teller; if you sought advice or help from a spiritualist in any form or guise; you need deliverance.

Many Christians may go for five, ten or fifteen years without being forced to seek deliverance. The enemy has cleverly hidden his trail. When these spirits enter at an early age they become so identified with the person that he believes they are just quirks in his personality. It is surprising to learn how many of these things gained entrance through seemingly innocent or even childish contacts, almost like a game or a plaything. The enemy does not put warning labels on his traps.

The third source of occult bondage or oppression springs from curses, spells, hexes, etc. This is not because of inheritance or involvement, but rather an invasion sent upon us by envious enemies who seek to harm us or kill us. These are the three main avenues by which the occult can wreak havoc physically, emotionally and/or spiritually. In deliverance we must always investigate thee three sources.

These openings are like three different levels. The top one many times has to do with that in which we personally dabbled. There are still other levels where curses and inherited factors enter in. Each must be dealt with in order to achieve real liberty in the Lord Jesus Christ. Every legal right or ground which Satan has acquired over you or your family because of occult involvement must be canceled out. These can be annulled only by the authority of Jesus Christ operating through a believer who is knowledgeable in the deliverance ministry. If you are seeking deliverance or are engaged in a deliverance ministry remember these things. You will be amazed to discover how much influence the occult, witchcraft, magic and sorcery, etc., exercise upon lives.

Norman Parish is a veteran missionary in Guatemala. He tells of praying for a Mennonite missionary in Honduras several years ago. He had come from Pennsylvania and was having all kinds of problems concerning his health and family. The Lord revealed that the source of trouble was water witching or divining. He said he had never practiced it but that his father was an expert water watcher. People in the community would call upon him to utilize this ability to discover underground springs and where to sink a well.

While some think of this as just an innocent ability or “gift,” it is actually an expression of occult power. Even though he had not “witched” for water, he and his family suffered because of the sin of the father. With the widespread scattering of various occult practices it is unlikely that anyone has missed some evil inheritance. We have talked with water witching spirits several times.

Never be as foolish as was a highly demonized lady. She visited a service where demons erupted two or three times and people began to shake, scream, writhe and thresh about. Halfway through the deliverance session she became frightened, stomped out of the door, and said, “I prefer my demons.” She never returned for help, choosing to live with evil spirits rather than submit to deliverance. Soon after this incident she became deathly ill and the demons killed her with a very painful death. She knew that she needed deliverance, but rejected the truth, not willing to be obedient.

Sadly enough, the thing really keeping most people from deliverance in public is pride. One of the advantages of public or mass deliverance is that it crushes pride. Many come requesting deliverance, but want a private session. Because of pride they will receive little help unless it is public. Pride must be brought down and dethroned in order for us to become the kind of Christians we should be.

The Bible speaks of the danger of ignorance in God’s people (Hosea 4:6) and how risky it is even to bring things God classes as abomination into our homes (Deut 7:25,26). Unfortunately, our generation is so ignorant of God’s Word that it has been quite simple for Satan to attack us at will.

Many unknowingly invite demonic attack by dabbling in jewelry loaded with occult symbolism and power. An amulet is worn to ward off evil spirits, while a talisman supposedly transmits power to the wearer. Often it is covered with figures or words alleged to bring good luck and avert evil. It is an insult to God for believers to wear such trinkets when they have such marvelous promises (Psalm 50:15; 91:2,11).

Amulets are said to guard against the third or “evil eye” used in witchcraft to inflict injury or harm. The Bible mentions this in Mark 7:21,22 and Proverbs 22:6. Sometimes this is symbolic of deity and bears names such as the Eye of Ra, Eye of Atuor, or the Eye of Horus and is often associated with jealousy. The Grecians had a phylactos for protection.

The Italian Horn or Cornu (a wiggly horn) is sometimes worn alone or in combination with a cross. One woman reports that before she was born again she wore this on a chain. She was sick for eighteen years, underwent five major surgical operations, and was in the hospital twelve times. Some protection!

The occult (hidden, secret) realm belongs to Satan and the demons. Those who become involved will be badly damaged by the contact. They receive a curse from God to the third and fourth generation. Occult dabbling will lead to all sorts of problems from physical sickness to moral and mental troubles.

Another charm supposed to work against the evil eye is the Manyu Cornatu or The Hand. There is an amulet called a Figa (a fist with index and little finger, pointing up and the two middle fingers held down by the thumb). It is sometimes called a Manu (to make a fig with the hand). This sign is used as a “goat’s head” by Satan worshipers and also as an obscene gesture.

Another thing commonly seen is the Ankh, symbol of the Egyptian fertility goddess (lust). One branch of witches called Alexandrians combine a rose with five petals with the Ankh. It is a cross with an oval loop on top. A ram or goat’s head is worn by Satan worshipers. This too is a symbol of fertility and lust.

All the signs of the Zodiac are rooted in the Babylon system so hated and detested by God. Believers should avoid anything having to do with such abominations as astrology and horoscopes (Deuteronomy 4:19; 18:10; Isaiah 47:13). We should have nothing to do with mood rings, four leaf clovers, rabbit’s foot, horse shoes, etc. Biorhythm and Biofeedback, the pseudo-scientific computations done with a calculator, were invented by a practicing witch, I understand. Reflexology and Irisology, likewise, smack of occult roots.

Copper rings, bracelets and necklaces are advertised as “good luck” or “healing” articles. Turquoise jewelry fashioned in American Indian witchcraft designs flood the land.

It is amazing how far Satan has pushed his program of contagion. This causes legal grounds and legal holds to be given to his demons for attaching on their dupes, their homes and families. A nationally distributed brand of jewelry is manufactured by a witches’ coven. Similarly a popular cosmetic company is one of the leading pushers of zodiac and other occult jewelry.

Owls and frogs have cropped up everywhere in pictures, ceramics and macrame. We and other deliverance people have discovered these to be channels for witchcraft spirits to attack. The Bible classifies them as unclean creatures associated with darkness, demons and witchcraft. (Exodus 8; Lev 11:17; Ps 78:45; 105:30; Rev 16:13).

A long-time deliverance worker shared with me his conviction that one of the reasons for various animals and birds being classified unclean was because these particular creatures are more susceptible to demonic possession than others. This is interesting because often God ordered total extermination of some cities by the Israelites, including men, women, children, babies and all of their animals and birds–even including “clean” ones. The reason was because of the in-depth saturation of even the poultry and livestock with witchcraft and occult practices. To avoid contagion and infection by these deadly spiritual viruses, the command was total destruction. 4

Studying some Bible characters will help us to avoid their mistakes and the traps into which they fell. Cain, Esau, Samson and Saul and others all made foolish and tragic mistakes. Because they failed to follow God singleheartedly they lost health, position, power, literally everything.

There is a man in the Old Testament who possessed tremendous gifts and potential. However, both Old and New Testaments record the sad history of a prophet who became a soothsayer, or more plainly, a witch. His name is Balaam (II Peter 2:15).

Scripture says that God forbade the madness of the prophet. Balaam is not said to be a false, but a true prophet who became mentally and spiritually deranged. He started out in the Spirit of the Lord with great miracles and manifestations of God. Through a series of wrong choices he became a false prophet, a soothsayer or fortune teller, dabbling in witchcraft.

This led to disgrace and being put to death by the children of Israel with the sword (Joshua 13:22). He is labeled as Balaam the soothsayer (defined as: a man who has the spirit of divination; a fortune teller, a man who can divine the future). In a matter of months Balaam completely ceased being a prophet of the Lord and became a soothsayer, worthy of death. What caused this to happen should be a serious warning to all who have entered the Charismatic movement.

Be warned that anyone who enters the realm of the spirit world is in serious danger unless he walks the straight and narrow path all the way. There is safety only in strict obedience to the Lord and His Word.

Three entire chapters in Numbers tell the story of Balaam (Numbers 22,23,24), indicating the importance of this account in the sight of God. These should be read and reread, studied and analyzed. In these passages are certain truths about the means God uses to keep us from falling into the enemy’s trap. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

Consider some of the signs of a true prophet which appeared and developed in Balaam’s life. In Numbers 22:6 the word of Balaam was so powerful that God confirmed and corroborated it.

“For I wot that he whom thou blessed is blessed, and he whom thou curseth is cursed.” (Numbers 22:6)

Everything that Balaam said came to pass. If he cursed, God cursed; if he blessed, God blessed. His word carried power. One of the signs of a true prophet is that God backs his word in every detail. God indeed confirms the word and performs the counsel for those He has called and appointed to certain specific ministries (Isaiah 44:26).

Balaam was also visited by the Lord and God frequently spoke to him. It was not something which occurred only once or twice in his lifetime.

“And he said unto them, `Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as the Lord shall speak unto me’; and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

“And God came unto Balaam, and said, `What men are these with thee?’” (Numbers 22:8,9)

Notice God also spoke to him giving directions and guidance. Constant communication between the prophet and God is another mark of a prophet. In the Old Testament, God often appeared to certain ones communing with them.

We must never feel that we are so advanced in the things of God that we cannot fall into a snare of Satan as Balaam did. He had great advantages in these revelations and communications. However, his great blessings and gifts did not make him immune to the attacks of the enemy. As a matter of fact demonic activity steps up in direct proportion to the effectiveness of the Lord’s servant. In other words, he becomes a prime target of the enemy. As stated in an earlier book, “The blows of the enemy are directly proportionate to the amount of damage you are dealing him.”

In Satan worship, oftentimes the arms are crossed as a sign of submission to and being bound by the devil. Often in deliverance a subject will cross fingers, legs or arms and this in some way can give strength to the demons within. Watch for this for it can hinder the person getting free.

Often good luck charms, ankhs, astrological symbols and other jewelry with hex signs, etc., will cause interference with deliverance. They should be removed from contact with the person. Some objects, particularly rings bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry which has been given to a person by someone in witchcraft will have curses and/or bondage connected with them.

There is a resurgence of hex signs. These are ancient geometric and mystical motifs which are being incorporated into designs or clothing, jewelry, decorative objects and china. In antique shops there are often selections of rings, pendants, pins and various kinds of jewelry. Many of these were originally designed to bring good luck and to act as a talisman to chase evil. Some of the most popular currently include: The Egyptian ankh (a cross with a loop at the top, an ancient fertility symbol); the ancient witchcraft sign of the broken cross (popularly known as the peace symbol); chais (consists of Hebrew characters spelling the word life); all kinds of Polynesian tikkis, carved to represent various demon gods; African “jujus” shaped like snakes, hands, figures, and other things; a wiggly tail called the “Italian horn”; protectors from the evil eye; a hand with the index and little fingers pointing up (a satanic witchcraft sign); and a great variety of crosses, clovers, stars, wishbones, lucky coins, mystic medals, horseshoes and other items. These come in all sizes and colors and are made from a great variety of materials.

Another interesting thing is how many times in religious fetishes and statues there are dangerous resident demon powers. Sometimes it is not possible to destroy the offending object. For example, a young man in our congregation who had been delivered from much religious bondage lived in the home of his parents. One parent was given a large religious statue as a gift. In this image the young man sensed a vicious spirit which pulled at him whenever he passed it.

Because it was not his home nor his property he could not destroy it. His parent would unable to accept the truth about the statue therefore he could not discuss it with her. After prayer, he was instructed to take olive oil and anoint the image in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. He also cursed the evil spirits in it with the blood of Jesus, binding and casting them out with the power given believers. After this the evil presence was no longer radiated from the statue!

A young man in his twenties came to me one night, deeply troubled because of the recurrence of a strong masturbation habit. Following his conversion to Christ, he had gotten a victory over this long-standing problem. Now he was in a state worse that before. We paused to seek the Lord about the best way to proceed. Immediately, in my spirit, I saw a stack of rock and roll records, and I asked him if he had such records. He looked surprised and admitted he had some. However he had not listened to them since he began to attend our church. I asked where they were stored. He answered, “That’s funny, several weeks ago, after I learned how bad rock music was, I started to throw them out, but decided to stack them on the closet shelf. However, something seemed to tell me I should shove them under the bed out of the way. This is what I did.”

“And when did this nightly battle with lust begin?” I asked. He paled as he answered that it was the same time he put the records under his bed. I advised him to go home and destroy all the records. This ended the problem as abruptly as it had started.

A young couple reported heavy oppression on their house in spite of the fact that many suspect objects had been removed and destroyed. Two persons visited the home and immediately it was discerned that there was an accursed object in the house, hidden somewhere in a drawer. A systematic search finally located a small plaque in a bottom drawer. Long undisturbed, it had been given to the lady when she was in Bible School by a girl friend. On the face of it there was an innocuous motto but on the back was scribbled a cryptic curse, very small and hardly noticeable.

They immediately took it to the back yard, broke it in pieces and put it in the trash can. All of the curses were revoked and broken in Jesus’ name and the spirits commanded to depart. Upon reentering the home the heavy oppression was gone and has not returned.

In a home where many evil spirits had been cast out of people, peculiar problems developed. No one could sleep there and doors opened and closed by themselves all night long. Lights and radios would come on and off with no one near them. Footsteps were heard in the halls and on the stairs and terrible nightmares, frightened the children. Apparitions and other ghostly phenomenon plagued the people in the house. A crew of workers was dispatched to the house and they drove out the spirits which were there. The household then settled down and was calm. The problems ceased and did not return.

We moved all deliverance to the church building after this incident. If it is necessary to do an exorcism in a house it is wise to cleanse the house spiritually afterward. This can head off any trouble which might be caused by spirits remaining in the place. (For exorcism of house, see Battling the Hosts of Hell–Diary of an Exorcist).

We had another case where a family reported that each time the ten year-old son went into the bathroom alone he would begin to scream hysterically, trembling with fear. Men from the church went to help. After prayer it was discerned that there was a spirit of Abortion in the bathroom and they drove it out. They also went through the entire house cleansing it and this ended the trouble. It would be natural for a child to be frightened by a spirit of Abortion which is basically child murder. Evidently an abortion was attempted or had been done in that room before the family moved in.3

Believers must be careful about bringing incense into their homes. Most people are unaware that much of the incense sold in curio and novelty shops was manufactured by devotees of the Hare Krishna cult. Their wares are dedicated to this demon god of the Hindus and can cause much trouble.

To illustrate, while in high school, both of my teenaged daughters became ill. Prayer at home and at the church failed to bring more than temporary relief. They missed several days of school and we were puzzled by the stubborn sickness which seemed unaffected by prayer. We all went to church on Sunday morning. During the message I mentioned that we should be careful about incense. We might bring into our houses that which had been consecrated to demon spirits and therefore is an abomination to the Lord. I pointed out that Robert Peterson had warned of this in Are Demons for Real?

When we got home, the eldest daughter said nothing but went immediately to her room upstairs. In a moment she returned to the head of the stairs with a small package in her hand. With a strained look on her face she said, “Look at this, Dad.” and pitched it to me. On the package of incense was the picture of the Hindu deity Krishna and on the back was printed the Hare Krishna chant with instructions on how to get in touch with the “infinite.” On the bottom of the label was printed “Made in West Virginia by Devotees of Hare Krishna.”

I crumpled the package of incense sticks in my hand and said, “I rebuke the spirits of Hare Krishna in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” My daughter uttered a short shriek and collapsed straight to the floor–landing in the yoga lotus position! It frightened her because her legs involuntarily buckled under her.

We destroyed the incense and in very short order both girls were well again–no trace of their illness remaining. My daughter had paid no attention to the package when she bought the incense and was not even aware of who made it. Will all incense have this effect? I don’t know, but we decided to live without it. Some things are not worth the trouble they may cause. Be careful what you bring into your house.5

“Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it; but thou shalt utterly detest, and thou shall utterly abhor it, for it is a cursed thing.” (Deuteronomy 7:26)
